Former Assam Sahitya Sabha (ASS) president Paramananda Rajbongshi, who resigned from the AGP on Friday night, will be joining the BJP on Saturday.
Rajbongshi, who joined the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) in November last year, reportedly sought a party ticket from the Kalaigaon constituency.
However, the AGP had to deny him a ticket from Kalaigoan as its alliance partner BJP refused to give the constituency to the regional party.
The BJP on Friday named Madhuram Deka as a candidate in the constituency.
Sources said the saffron party is likely to field Rajbongshi in the Sipajhar constituency.
BJP insiders said the former president of the state’s apex literary body decided to jump ship after the saffron party promised him a ticket from Sipajhar constituency.
The BJP has reportedly decided to drop sitting MLA Binanda Saikia from Sipajhar.
Rajbongshi’s critics have described him as an ‘opportunist’ and ‘power hungry’. The writer-turned politician actively participated in the historic Assam Agitation.
