A number of Congress leaders including the sons of former Assam ministers, Prithvi Majhi and Rameswar Dhanuwar, shifted their allegiance from Congress to Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) on Sunday.

Sons of Congress leaders Prithvi Majhi and late Rameswar Dhanwar – Pradeep Majhi and Gautam Dhanwar – joined the BJP on Sunday.

Congress candidate for Patacharkuchi Assembly seat in 2016 Assembly elections, Sailen Kalita also joined the BJP on Sunday.

Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) MCLA Rajiv Brahma and Prabhat Musahari also joined the BJP during a joining ceremony at the Assam BJP headquarters in Hengrabari.

Assam BJP president Bhabesh Kalita welcomed all the new members to the party at Vajpayee Bhawan in Hengerabari.

Congress and BPF leaders’ joining BJP bears significance ahead of the forthcoming by-polls in five Assam Assembly seats.

“The BPF fort is almost coming to an end. BPF’s presence is zero in Baksa district,” said Assam BJP president Bhabesh Kalita adding, “The BJP started organisational work with one MCLA in BTC.”

“Now, a number of MCLs have joined the BJP. This joining will have a special impact on Bhabanipur, Gossaigaon, Mariyani and Thaowra. More BPF MCLAs will join the BJP,” Kalita said.

The Assam BJP president, however, clarified that Pramod Boro will remain as the chief executive member (CEM) of Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC).

While commenting on AIUDF president Badruddin Ajmal’s statement on the Garukhuti incident in Sipajhar, Kalita said, “The government will not run according to Badruddin Ajmal; eviction will continue.”
