GUWAHATI: In the lead-up to the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has made a bold statement, emphasizing the “central focus of this election is the re-election of Prime Minister Narendra Modi”.

According to Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, there seems to be a singular objective in this electoral process: “to reaffirm Modi’s leadership at the national level”.

Speaking to the media in Karbi Anglong district of Assam on Tuesday (April 02), CM Sarma expressed his perspective on the forthcoming elections, stating: “This election is to re-elect Prime Minister Narendra Modi. I don’t think there are any other issues in this election.”

He further elaborated, suggesting that beyond the re-election of Modi, there seemed to be little else of significance driving the electoral discourse.

Sarma’s remarks underscore a perspective that views the electoral exercise primarily as a procedural obligation, rather than a platform for substantive debate or decision-making.

He implied that the upcoming Lok Sabha elections seemed to be more about fulfilling a formal requirement, given the regularity of elections every five years, rather than addressing pressing issues or concerns facing the nation.

“It is a formality that every five years we have to vote, otherwise there was no need for even this election,” the Assam chief minister remarked, highlighting a sense of inevitability surrounding the electoral process.

From his viewpoint, the election appears to serve more as a ritualistic exercise rather than a means of addressing critical challenges or shaping the trajectory of governance.

The Assam chief minister’s statement is likely to stir debate and discussion among political circles and the electorate alike.
