The chief minister said that the bus owners should increase fares only after the situation gets normal, if they must.

“People’s financial stability has been hit hard by the pandemic. A major section of the society is struggling to cope with the situation. The owners of private buses in the state should postpone their decision to hike fare. We can discuss the issue later,” Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

CM Himanta Biswa Sarma further informed that Assam transport minister Chandra Mohan Patowary already had a word with owners of private buses and urged them not to hike fares.

Notably, the All Assam Motor Workers Union (AAMWU) has decided to hike bus fares by at least 50 per cent.

This decision of the union has drawn flak from a large section of the society, who mostly depend on bus services for day to day communication.
