The Assam Finance Department on Saturday released Rs 149 crore for distribution of free school uniforms to 37 lakh students studying in Lower Primary and Upper Primary Schools in the state.

The free distribution of school uniforms which was stalled in the year 2014-15, has resumed in the current year after the Central government has agreed to provide the fund after much persuasion by the incumbent state government.

The state education and finance minister Himanta Bishwa Sarma informed that an amount of Rs 400 would be incurred per uniform and the scheme would continue in coming years too.

On Gandhi Jayanti last year, State Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the government was considering giving free uniforms to students.

Sarma recently also said that he will ask for Rs 1962 crores from the finance department to fix the problems faced by government schools.

“10,000 schools need partition. Because of the lack of partition or wall, several classes are held in the same room. 1379 schools require toilets. 34, 165 schools don’t have a power connection.

“We will ask for 1962 crore rupees from the finance department to fix these issues before the next Gunotsav” he had said.
