Leader of the Opposition in Assam, Debabrata Saikia, on Sunday demanded Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal to initiate administrative measures against a section of the officials for harassing the religious and linguistic minority Indians and other indigenous people of the state in the name of ‘D’ voters and registering case against these people to fabricate them as foreigners.

A delegation of the Congress party led by Saikia, two legislators Rajdeep Goala and Zakir Hussain Shikdar, former minister Basanta Das, former MP Madhab Rajbangshi and members of the Udalguri district Congress committee visited the family of Gopal Das at Nichlamari village under Paneri constituency.

Gopal Das (62) of Nichlamari in Udalguri district committed suicide after being unable to bear the financial burden to remove the ‘D’ voter tag.

Talking to Northeast Now ACLP leader Debabrata Saikia said, “The villagers who gathered there when the Congress team visited Gopal Das’ family expressed their resentment as many of them have received ‘D’ voters notice despite being Indian citizens. Some of them even informed us that they had received notice even after their citizenship was proved in the court.”

The Congress delegation extended financial assistance to the family of Gopal Das and assured of providing legal and other facilities to the villagers in the coming days.

“We will extend all possible legal and other helps to give succour to those  who came to Assam till the midnight of March 24, 1971 on the basis of Assam Accord from any kind of harassment in the names of Foreigners Tribunal and ‘D’ voters,” Saikia said.
