Congress in Assam on Sunday accused BJP of killing the โ€˜soulโ€™ of the NRC by bringing the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.

APCC general secretary Durga Das Boro said, โ€œWe know that soul is immortal and Amit Shah termed the Assam Accord as the soul of NRC. But the BJP government has killed the soul by trying to implement the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.โ€

Boro alleged that the BJP has been maintaining a double standard on the issue of NRC update.

โ€œNRC was Congressโ€™ baby. BJP has just nurtured it. Now, BJP is trying to take credit for NRC in a bid to get political mileage before the Lok Sabha poll next year. But such gimmick would not work in the state anymore,โ€ Boro said.

While asking the BJP to make clear the partyโ€™s stand on NRC, Boro questioned, โ€œWhy cannot the BJP scrap the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 if they really want an error-free NRC and illegal immigrant-free Assam?โ€

Boro alleged the BJP is always working to protect the people of a particular religion.

Asking the BJP to make clear the definition of illegal migrants, Boro said, โ€œAccording to BJP, except the people belonging to a particular religion, others are illegal migrants that entered into India. But for the Congress, whoever entered the country after March 25, 1971 are illegal migrants.โ€

The APCC spokesperson also alleged that the BJP has politicised the NRC issue.

โ€œThe BJPโ€™s national president Amit Shah, who urged not to politicise the NRC, has been trying to use the NRC as a political agenda,โ€ Boro alleged, while claiming that Congress has never politicised the matter.

Besides, Boro also criticised the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) for maintaining โ€˜double standardโ€™ on the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.

โ€œThe AGP, on the one side, opposes the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 and on the other hand does not severe its tie with the BJP,โ€ Boro said.
