Former Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi on Sunday rejected media reports that he might be BJP’s chief ministerial candidate in Assam for the next state Assembly polls.

The reaction from the former CJI comes a day after former Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi claimed Ranjan Gogoi might be projected by BJP as the chief ministerial candidate in Assam in the next year’s Assembly polls.

However, a media report quoted Ranjan Gogoi as saying that the claim is not based on truth.

The former CJI said he is “not a politician” and has no such ambition.

The report quoted the former CJI, who was nominated to the Rajya Sabha, as saying: “A nominated member of the Rajya Sabha is different from a nominee of a political party. It is unfortunate that some people do not try to realise that.”

Assam BJP president Ranjeet Kumar Dass has also denied the claim by former CM Tarun Gogoi.

Talking to media persons in Guwahati on Saturday, Tarun Gogoi had said: “Former CJI Ranjan Gogoi might be projected as the next Assam CM by the BJP.”

“I have heard this from several sources,” the 3-time former Assam CM had said.

“If the former CJI could go to Rajya Sabha, then he might also agree to be the next CM candidate of the BJP from Assam as well,” former CM Gogoi added.
