Activists, academics, writers and conscious citizens of the state have planned a protest in Guwahati against the police firing on protesters at Maibang railway station in Southern Assam’s Dima Hasao district.

The protest will be held at 4.30 p.m. on Saturday at Guwahati Club Rotary point of the city.

Two youths were killed and over a dozen injured when police opened fire on nearly a thousand protesters at Maibang railway station on Thursday.

They were demanding an apology from Jagdamba Mall, an RSS activist, who had recently told the media that the draft plan for the Naga Accord showed Dima Hasao district as part of Nagalim, on a website, triggering public anger.

It led to a 12-hour bandh call by various Dimasa organisations.

“A candlelight march will be taken out from Guwahati Club Rotary point tomorrow as a mark of protest against the police brutality on the unarmed protesters in Maibong,” activist Bhaben Handique, researcher Ankur Tamuli Phukan and young writer Juri Baruah  told Northeast Now.

Despite no organisational muscle, the impromptu protest has drawn support on social media with many committing themselves to turn up at the protest site.

“I am planning to go there to show solidarity with the people of Dima Hasao despite my busy schedule,” Manashri Goswami, a city based journalist, told Ne Now.

Following the incident, the protesters had alleged the police intentionally fired upon them.

“People vandalized whatever they could lay their hands on only after police resorted to lathicharge to disperse them when they were demonstrating peacefully,” said a Maibong resident.
