Guwahati: The Cyber Police Station of the Crime Investigation Department (CID), Assam, has initiated action following an FIR filed by Dr Sadagar Deuri, a distinguished surgeon and Professor of Surgery at Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH).
Dr Deuri, widely respected for his service to underprivileged patients, fell victim to a sophisticated “digital arrest” scam allegedly orchestrated by cybercriminals impersonating law enforcement officials.
The fraudsters duped the victim of approximately Rs 49 lakh through a series of deceptive transfers. In a significant breakthrough, the investigating team has successfully placed a hold on more than Rs 8 lakh of the defrauded amount in the initial phase.
Coordinated efforts with banks and financial institutions are underway to freeze additional accounts and facilitate the reversal of funds to the victim’s account.
A case has been registered at the Cyber Police Station, CID Assam, and a detailed investigation is underway. The CID is deploying all available resources, including technical analysis and inter-agency coordination, to trace the money trail, identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
The Cyber Cell of CID Assam has urged citizens to remain vigilant against such cyber frauds, stating that no legitimate law enforcement agency conducts arrests through phone or video calls or demands money transfers for “verification” or “clearance”.
In case of any suspicious call or message claiming involvement in a case, citizens have been advised to immediately contact the National Cyber Crime Helpline at 1930 or report the matter online at cybercrime.gov.in.
Assam Police reiterated its commitment to combating cybercrime and protecting the public from evolving digital threats.
