CAB Protest GS Road Guwahati

While the CAB came up for hearing at Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, GS Road in Guwahati turned into a battle ground.

Hundreds of protesters assembled near Janata Bhawan at Dispur, the Assam State Secretariat, and shouted slogans against the CAB.

“BJP go back,……go back, go back,” the protesters shouted in front of Janata Bhawan.

The battle cry, “Jaii Aai Axom (Hail Mother Assam)”, resonated the length and breadth of GS Road on Wednesday afternoon.

As the protesters tried to zero in to Janata Bhawan, police fired several rounds of tear gas shells in front of Guwahati Tea Auction Centre.

Police was also armed with Vajra, the water cannon to disperse the crowd.

The situation started to turn hostile from around 11 am when protesters started march on the busy GS Road.

Thousands of protesters staged marches from the north and south end of the busy road, and started to proceed towards Janata Bhawan, the state secretariat.

The protest march turned violent as hundreds of students from Cotton University and other colleges of Guwahati clashed with security forces when they were stopped at ABC point near Rajiv Bhawan.

To disperse the protesters, police and para-military forces resorted to lathi-charge at ABC point.

Police also fired six rounds of tear gas shells to stop the protesters from marching towards Dispur.

Some students were reportedly injured because of police actions.

But within less than half-an-hour, the protesters re-grouped on GS Road and staged a sit-in protest on the road.

Traffic on the busy GS Road came to a grinding halt.
