Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA from Hojai, Shiladitya Dev, has again stirred up a hornet’s nest by saying that illegal citizens are being involved in National Register of Citizens (NRC) work. He made this allegation before the media on Friday and said that the Government was “wrong in pressing suspicious Bangladeshi nationals for the NRC exercise”.

Fumed Dev, “This is a big scam and it has facilitated Bangladeshi Muslim names in the NRC. We will not agree to an NRC with Bangladeshi nationals’ names in it.”

Dev also alleged that more than 11 districts in Assam are Muslim-majority areas and the “illegal citizens” who are being pressed into this whole NRC exercise will naturally have a “leaning” towards their brethren as a result of which in the said districts, most of the ‘D voters’ will find their name in the final draft of the NRC which is now scheduled to be released on Supreme Court’s extended deadline – July 30.

Dev further remarked, “I request the Honourable Supreme Court of India and the State NRC coordinator, Prateek Hajela, to order for cross-verification in the said 11 districts otherwise it will be impossible to accept the final draft of the NRC. The Rohingya Muslims have already been chased out of Myanmar.”

The Guwahati Police earlier in January this year had registered two FIRs against Dev for making provocative statements when the first part of the draft NRC was published on December 31 midnight.
