Miffed at the at the North East Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) over the sudden release of water from Doyang hydro electric project in Nagaland triggering deluge in Assam’s Golaghat district, BJP MLA Mrinal Saikia has threatened to take legal action the power corporation.
Saikia, who represents Kumtai LAC in Golaghat district, alleged that the hydro power producer corporation had released ‘excess waters’ from its dam under the Doyang hydro electric project without notifying the Golaghat district administration in advance. The Doyang hydro electric project of NEEPCO is located in hilly region of bordering Nagaland.

“NEEPCO had released excess waters from dam of its Doyang project and informed Golaghat district administration one hour in advance. Can it be possible for the administration to take full measures to meet flood situation? NEEPCO is fully responsible for present flood fury in Golaghat district. I will file a writ petition at Gauhati High Court against NEEPCO. The enterprise should compensate flood affected villagers in Golaghat district,” Saikia told Pratidin Time.
he residents Golaghat also alleged that the release of water from the Doyang hydro power project has led to flooding in the district in Upper Assam.
Villagers in Lakhimpur district had blamed NEEPCO’s Ranganadi hydro power project in Arunachal Pradesh and in Nagaon and Morigaon district, residents held NEPCO owned Kopili hydro power project responsible for the deluge.
