He said the project lacks basic safety and security measures which creates trouble for people in the downstream areas.

Sharma said a signalling system for release of water needs to be set up and coordination with Lakhimpur district administration should be increased by Neepco.

Sharma was accompanied by Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad members who have been fighting for the safety of people residing downstream.

The Assam government had asked Sarma to conduct an in-depth study of the Ranganadi hydel project to find a channel to release water that caused devastating floods in Lakhimpur district last year.

The release of water from the Ranganadi project had led to widespread floods and destruction across Upper Assam.

The Neepco has been saying that the water level at its Ranganadi dam in Arunachal Pradesh helped divert excess water and minimise floods downstream.
