As per the results of Panchayat polls in Assam declared by the Assam State Election Commission (ASEC) on Wednesday, till 5 pm, the ruling BJP is leading by winning maximum number of seats followed by the Congress and the AGP.
The polling was conducted for four different posts – Gaon Panchayat Ward Member, Gaon Panchayat President, Anchalik Panchayat Member and Zila Parishad Member.
Informing about the results of the Panchayat polls till 5 pm on Wednesday, Harendra Nath Bora, Assam State Election Commissioner, during a press conference here said: “As per the counting of votes till 5 pm, out of the total seats of 1089 Gaon Panchayat (GP) Ward Member, BJP has won 481 seats, the Congress has won 294 seats, AGP has won 115 seats, CPI(M) – 5, AIUDF – 14, BPF -3 and Independent candidates have won 175 seats.”
He also informed that Panchayat polls results for GP Ward Members have been in 19 districts.
As per the poll results in the post of Gaon Panchayat President received from 17 districts, the Bora said out of the 71 seats of GP President, results of which have already been declared, the BJP has won 33 seats, the Congress has won 20 seats, AGP – 10 seats, AIUDF – 2 seats, BPF – nil while Independent candidates have won 6 seats.
On the other hand, as per the poll results in the post of Anchalik Panchayat Member received from 16 districts, out of the 58 seats, the BJP has won 30 seats, followed by the Congress – 15 seats, AGP – 8 seats, AIUDF – 2 seats and the Independent candidates have won 3 seats.
The results for Zila Parishad Members have not been announced officially.
Bora also said that the counting of votes continues across the State in a peaceful way.
The process of counting of votes is going in a slow pace due as the poll was conducted on ballot papers, said State Election Commissioner Bora.
While results have been announced after 2-3 hours since the start of the counting in Sadiya and Margherita, Bora also said he has no report of any untoward incident during the counting of votes in Hojai as reported.
He also informed that the counting of votes will continue in the whole night.
Polling officials have been engaged for the counting of votes in phase-wise.
A polling official will be engaged for a period of 8 hours.
The polling was conducted on December 5, 2018 and December 9, 2018.
Bora further informed re-polling was conducted in different parts of the State on various grounds. While re-polling was conducted in 15 polling stations on December 7, re-polling was conducted in 39 polling stations on December 10. Re-polling was conducted in 16 polling stations on December 12.
Though Opposition Leader of Assam State Assembly Debabrata Saikia requested not to conduct re-polling in Karimganj, the Election Commission conducted re-polling in the district on the basis of the report from the Deputy Commissioner of Karimganj, Bora added.
