Counting of votes for the recently concluded two-phase panchayat elections in Assam began from 8 am on Tuesday across all districts of Assam.

The counting of votes takes place in Inter State Bus Terminus and Inter State Truck Terminus of Silchar.

Cachar district has the highest number of ZPCs, 27 in all with 162 GPs and 1620 GP member posts. In all 10,55,000 voters are in its ambit.

Elaborate arrangements have been made to conduct error-free counting. A total of 78,571 candidates are contesting for the 26,808 panchayat seats.

Notably, around 82 per cent voting was recorded in the two-phase elections.

All major political parties including Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress, Asom Gana Parishad AGP), Bodoland Peoples Front (BPF), Left parties and All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) among others have put up their candidates in the elections.

Voting for the panchayat polls were held in two phases on December 5 and December 9.

Tight security arrangement has been put in place at all counting centres.
