Assam’s Panchayat polls: BJP leads in Margherita sub-division

Of the total 601 candidates in Margherita Sub-division, 591 candidates are in the fray while 10 candidates have already been declared uncontested

With the counting of votes polled in the 1st phase of Panchayat polls held on December 5 in Margherita Sub-division continues, the BJP remains on the top by winning maximum of seats in the posts of Gaon Panchayat Ward Member, Gaon Panchayat President and Anchalik Panchayat Member, followed by the Congress and the AGP.

The Golai GP in Digboi has already been captured by the BJP candidates. Of the total 1,90,711 voters, 67.48 per cent had turned out and exercised their franchise in 5 ZPCs, 22 Gaon Panchayats on December 5, 2018.

According to the latest official input, BJP won 60 seats while Congress won 27 and one Independent candidate came out successful out of the total 22 Anchalik Panchayat members’ seats.

Of the 22 seats for GP President, Brahmajan and Hamukjan seats were won by the BJP while the Dwarmara seat was won by the Congress.

Of the 220 seats for Gaon Panchayat Ward Member, the results for 88 members were out of which 60 went to the BJP while 27 went to the Congress and 1 to the AGP.

In Dwarmara GP, the Congress secured victory at 6 wards leaving 4 wards for the saffron party. Six wards in Brahmajan GP went to the BJP fold while 4 seats were secured by the Congress. Similarly, 6 wards were won by the BJP in Lekhapani GP. Congress was outperformed by the saffron party in Jagun GP wherein out of 10 seats, single ward member seat went to the Congress.

The election was held in 11 Panchayats for 3 ZP seats, 11 AP Members’ seats, 11 GP Presidents and 110 Ward Members in Digboi Assembly Constituency wherein the Golai GP was stormed by the BJP with 8 seats leaving just two for the Congress.

The trend reveals that saffron party might prevail in most of the Panchayats under Digboi constituency.

Of the total 601 candidates, 591 candidates are in the fray while 10 candidates have already been declared uncontested.

“The final results are likely to be available only by late night or the next day since polling was conducted using paper ballots. The counting is underway amid tight security. CCTVs have been installed in counting centers and the team is working amidst a peaceful atmosphere,” said Sumit Satawan, the SDO (Civil), Margherita.
