As many as 1.4 lakh cases were pending at the Foreigners Tribunals (FTs) in Assam as of December 31, 2020, Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai informed Lok Sabha on Tuesday.

The Foreigners Tribunals (FTs) determines the nationality of suspected citizens in Assam.

He said that the FTs have disposed off over 1.36 lakh cases in the last five years.

Minister Rai said FTs are functioning only in Assam at present and as per the information made available by the state government, the total number of cases pending in these tribunals as of December 31, 2020, are 1,40,050.

The total cases disposed of by the FTs in the last five years is 1,36,064, he said in a written reply to a question.
