Assam: Wild elephant kills one at Samaguri

The man-elephant conflict at Samaguri in Assam’s Nagaon district has turned worse over the past few days.

Another person was trampled to death by wild elephants at Udmari in the area on Sunday night.

The death of the elderly person led to unruly situation in the area.

Irate locals ransacked the office of the Forest department in the region after the incident.

The victim has been identified as one Motilal Munda who would be above 50 years of age.

After sustaining grievous injuries in the elephant attack, Munda was rushed to the primary health centre at Samaguri.

However, he succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital.

In the aftermath, villagers ransacked the Forest office in the area alleging utter failure of the department to mitigate the menace.

Notably, the area has been witnessing man-elephant conflict in recent times.

Herds of wild pachyderms come down from the Karbi Hills in search of food and create havoc in the area.

The wild elephants destroy the paddy fields and also attack human beings.

Several persons have lost their lives in the attacks by wild elephants.

There were couple of occasions when wild elephants also fall prey to the human beings.

Munda was attacked when he went to his cultivated land to chase away the herd of wild elephants.
