Ahead of India’s 73rd Independence Day, a ‘unity run’ was held by the district administration of Cachar in Assam’s Barak Valley on Wednesday.

The run for freedom was to create awareness among the youths of the sacrifices made by the freedom fighters.
The unity run commenced from the deputy commissioner’s office traversing a distance of one kilometre.
Hundreds of school children, sports persons, and office-bearers of the deputy commissioner’s office, took part in this unity run which was flagged off by Cachar deputy commissioner, Laya Madduri, herself, and chairman of Silchar Municipal Board, Niharendra Narayan Tagore.
Laya Madduri, who too joined in this unity run and completed the course, treading along with these school children, speaking to Northeast Now, said, “This is the time when we all should remember and pay respects to the freedom fighters that have made us free.”
“We need to create that kind of awareness among the new generations and try to build up a strong country highlighting the sacrifices that our freedom fighters have made,” she said.
Prizes too were distributed later among the participating young sports-persons who completed this unity run.
Dressed in orange, white, and green, the boys of Residential Special Training Centre of Silchar, who too jogged this distance, were the cynosure of all eyes.
A peace march too would be held on Wednesday evening from the Deputy Commissioner’s office to the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in Gandhi park, wherein, candles would be lit paying respects to the father of the nation.
