The deceased have been identified as Om Gowala and Janu Munda.

Doomdooma: The bodies of a young man and a young woman were recovered from a pond at Chotahapjan 17 No. Line under Makum Police Station in Assam’s Tinsukia district on Wednesday night. Police have launched an investigation into the incident.

The exact cause of death is yet to be determined. Police said all possible angles are being examined pending the post-mortem report.

Police officials said the circumstances surrounding the deaths are still under investigation.

“The investigation is at a preliminary stage. The exact cause of death can only be ascertained after the post-mortem examination and collection of all relevant evidence,” a police official associated with the investigation said.

The deceased have been identified as Om Gowala and Janu Munda.

According to local sources, the two were reportedly in a relationship. Family members of Om Gowala told police that he had left home after dinner on Wednesday evening. Shortly afterwards, local residents found the two in a nearby pond and informed the police.

A team from Makum Police Station, led by Officer-in-Charge Pulak Kumar, reached the spot after receiving the information.

“We responded immediately after receiving the information and completed all necessary legal procedures. The investigation will proceed on the basis of medical findings and other evidence,” another police official said.

With the help of local residents, police recovered the bodies and sent them to Tinsukia Medical College and Hospital, Makum, for post-mortem examination.

A large number of people gathered near the pond during the recovery operation.

Police have appealed to the public not to speculate about the cause of death until the post-mortem and forensic examination are completed.

According to local residents, the officer leading the operation arranged transportation for the bodies and covered the vehicle expenses for several people returning from the medical college after completing the required formalities.

Police have registered a case and are investigating whether the deaths were accidental, suicidal or due to any other circumstances.

Officials said further action will be taken based on the post-mortem findings and other evidence collected during the investigation.
