Doomdooma: A tragic railway accident claimed the life of an elderly man at Makum in Assamโ€™s Tinsukia district late Friday night after he was reportedly struck by a DEMU passenger train travelling from Tinsukia to Margherita.

According to sources, the incident occurred around 11 pm near Dharm Kata at Sukhanpukhuri in Makum when the man was attempting to cross the railway tracks.

The speeding DEMU train allegedly hit him with severe impact, leading to his death on the spot.

The identity of the deceased could not be ascertained till the filing of this report.

Soon after receiving information about the incident, a patrol team from Makum Police Station reached the spot and initiated a preliminary inquiry into the matter.

Railway Police personnel were subsequently informed and later arrived at the scene to take over further procedures.

The body was recovered in the presence of railway authorities and sent to Makum Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem examination.

Police sources said an investigation has been initiated to ascertain the exact circumstances leading to the accident.
