Dibrugarh: In a joint operation, Dibrugarh and Tinsukia police busted an alleged human organ trafficking racket and arrested four persons from Margherita and Dibrugarh on Thursday.

The arrested have been identified as Zakir Hussain (53), Shankar Chentanu (28), Samir Pal (37) and Gopal Roy (31).

According to police, the accused were allegedly attempting to take a 35-year-old man, Rajib Dey from Margherita, to sell his kidney after luring him with promises of money and employment.

Police said Samir Pal and Gopal Roy are residents of Dibrugarh, while Zakir Hussain and Shankar Chentanu are from the Veneer Mill area in Margherita.

Sources said the illegal organ trafficking network has been operating across parts of Assam, with investigators suspecting wider links.

Following a complaint lodged by the victimโ€™s family, a joint operation was launched under Tinsukia Deputy Superintendent of Police Faiz Ahmed, leading to the arrest of the four accused from different locations in Dibrugarh and Tinsukia districts

A case has been registered at Margherita police station, and investigation is underway.

Police are also probing whether any hospitals, medical personnel or doctors were linked to the alleged racket.

Sources said such kidney trafficking networks have been active in tea garden areas of upper Assam, often targeting economically vulnerable families.
