Guwahati: The Assam transport department has asked the school bus operators in Guwahati to install CCTV cameras inside the school buses.
The Assam transport department on Monday issued certain directions for the school authorities, both private and government, in accordance with the Supreme Court guidelines.
Gautam Das, assistant transport commissioner, Kamrup (Metro), said violation of the order of the transport department will attract a penalty of Rs 10,000.
“There are certain guidelines set by the Supreme Court as well as directions from the National Commission for Protection for Child Rights for the safety of students while travelling in school buses. The school authorities must adhere to these,” Das said.
He said apart from the school buses, any other vehicle used as a school van will come under the purview of the directions of the transport department.
The school buses and vans must be painted yellow and the words “school bus” must be written in front and at the rear of the vehicles.
If it is a hired bus, “On School Duty” should be clearly mentioned.
He said that the vehicles must have a first-aid box and a fire extinguisher.
“The name of the school and telephone number must be written on the bus. The door of the bus should be fitted with a reliable lock. There should be enough space under the seats to keep school bags,” Das said
