People with more than two children will not be eligible for the Assam government’s schemes, said chief minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday.

He said that the government has decided to implement population control norms in select schemes of the Assam government.

Chief minister Sarma said the norms would not be applicable to all the government schemes.

“We can’t implement two-child norms in free admission of children to schools or Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. But if we start a CM Awas Yojana, then this point may be applied,” he said.

Dr. Sarma said AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal has also welcomed the government move on women’s education.

In 2019, the Assam government had decided that people with more than two children will not be eligible for government jobs.

“Those with more than two children would not be considered for government jobs from January 1, 2021,” the state government had maintained.
