Guwahati: Abhijit Majumdar, the Assam chief of the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC), resigned from the party on Friday, alleging that it had increasingly become an organisation functioning solely for Muslims in both Assam and West Bengal.

Majumdar submitted his resignation to Mamata Banerjee via email, adding to a growing series of resignations and internal dissent within the party following its crushing defeat in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections.

In his resignation letter, Majumdar claimed that the partyโ€™s image in Assam had increasingly become that of an organisation working exclusively for Muslims. He further alleged that a similar political approach was visible in West Bengal.

Stating that he could no longer continue under such circumstances, Majumdar said the partyโ€™s functioning and political direction had made it impossible for him to remain associated with it.

His resignation comes amid visible unrest within the TMC after several high-profile exits and internal disagreements following the Assembly election debacle.

Earlier, senior TMC leader and former Rajya Sabha MP Santanu Sen resigned as the partyโ€™s national spokesperson, citing corruption allegations and the handling of the RG Kar rape-murder case among the reasons for stepping down.

In his resignation letter to Mamata Banerjee, Sen said he was unable to defend the party over what he described as โ€œimmoral actsโ€ and corruption-related controversies.

He referred to issues including the RG Kar rape-murder case, the Abhaya case and the alleged cash-for-jobs scam, while also acknowledging the public mandate delivered in the recently concluded Assembly elections.

โ€œEven though I did not agree with views during various difficult times, I fought publicly for the party in the media on many controversial issues. But in the current situation, when the people of Bengal have rejected us for various immoral acts and corruption, my mind no longer agrees to support them as a spokesperson,โ€ Sen wrote.

TMC MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar also resigned as chief of the partyโ€™s womenโ€™s wing and stepped down from several organisational posts.

In her resignation letter, Dastidar alleged that the party had failed to protect her from alleged misconduct and verbal abuse by a fellow MP, in an apparent reference to senior TMC leader Kalyan Banerjee.

The resignations have exposed widening cracks within the TMC following its heavy defeat in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) swept the polls by winning 207 of the 293 seats on May 4, ending the TMCโ€™s long-standing rule in the state.

The BJP further consolidated its position by winning the Falta Assembly constituency during the repoll held on May 21, increasing pressure on the Mamata Banerjee-led party amid continuing internal dissent.
