Doomdooma: Tinsukia Sadar police, assisted by Hijuguri police, detained more than 22 suspects on Thursday during a major operation following a series of thefts reported from different parts of Tinsukia town. Police sources said stolen items were also recovered from several locations.
The operation followed repeated complaints of theft from different areas of the town over the past few days. The recovery of two bodies within two days also prompted police to intensify their investigations and examine various aspects of the incidents.
Those detained are being questioned by the police. Preliminary information suggests that some of them may be linked to substance abuse. However, drug use by itself does not establish involvement in any crime, and the status of the cases will be determined through the ongoing investigation.
Residents have raised concerns over substance abuse, theft and snatching in the town. Complaints about the misuse of substances such as Dendrite have also surfaced periodically. Locals have alleged that some youths struggling with addiction become involved in activities ranging from scrap collection to theft and snatching.
Police are continuing their investigation and questioning of the detained persons. Residents have urged the authorities to intensify regular patrolling and take measures to address theft and substance-related problems in the town.
