Guwahati: Around 10 businessmen in Doomdooma, Assamโs Tinsukia district, have reportedly received extortion letters allegedly issued in the name of ULFA-I, triggering concern among the local business community.
The letters reportedly carry the names and purported signatures of ULFA-I finance secretary Lt Gen Michael Asom and assistant finance secretary Major Abhimanyu Asom.
Following receipt of the letters, the affected businessmen approached the police and lodged complaints. Police have initiated an inquiry into the matter and are investigating the origin of the letters.
Meanwhile, ULFA-I has denied issuing the extortion notices, terming them fake. In a statement, the outfit said it had not sent any extortion letters to businessmen or other individuals in Doomdooma.
The outfit alleged that an unidentified group had misused the names of its finance functionaries and forged their signatures to circulate the letters.
ULFA-I has urged businessmen in Doomdooma to remain cautious and avoid engaging with those allegedly responsible for the fake notices.
Police are continuing their inquiry, with further details awaited.
