Guwahati: Three persons lost their lives on Saturday after a bathing trip turned tragic in the Pagladia River at Nijbor Shiral Katahbari, which falls under Ghograpar Police Station in Assam’s Nalbari district.

Sources said a 35-year-old woman, Gudu Deka, a resident of Nijbor Shiral Katahbari, had called her sister and her would-be brother-in-law, who had arrived from Guwahati, to visit her home.

Later in the day, Gudu Deka, her sister Pinki Das (24), and Rohit Gutung (27) went to the nearby river for a bath. While in the water, they are believed to have entered a deep section and were swept under.

A child present on the riverbank raised an alarm, prompting nearby villagers to rush to the location and pull the three out in a severely critical state.

All three were taken immediately to Nalbari Medical College and Hospital, where medical staff declared them dead. A local eyewitness said villagers acted after hearing a child crying near the river and managed to recover the victims after considerable effort before shifting them for treatment.

Locals suspect that excavation of sand and ongoing embankment construction in the river may have altered the riverbed and created deep pits at the site. They believe these changes could have played a role in the incident.
