Security has been beefed up in Assam ahead of the publication of the National Register of Citizens (NRC), scheduled to be published on Saturday (August 31).

Assam director general of police Kuladhar Saikia on Thursday informed that all the security arrangements have been taken care of and police and other security forces have been briefed about the arrangements.

“Superintendents of Police in every district have sensitized police personnel in order to assure proper security arrangements,” Saikia further informed.

“We hope that the citizens of Assam will support the legal process and I believe this entire process will be completed peacefully,” the DGP further added.

Earlier in the day, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) reiterated that non-inclusion of a person’s name in NRC does not amount to his or her being declared a foreigner.

“Do not believe in rumours related to the final publication of NRC,” the MHA urged the people of Assam.

“Every individual left out from final NRC can appeal to Foreigners Tribunals (FTs), an increased number of which are being established,” the MHA tweeted.

“For those who are left out of the final list can fill up appeals in FTs and the time limit has been increased to 120 days from 60 days,” the ministry further added.
