As per the report in every 100 accidents, at least 30 people were killed while 89 were injured.

“Eight people were killed and 20 injured in an average in road accidents in Assam every day in 2018,” the report added.

At the national level, Assam is ranked 16, the report further revealed.

The report further added that the occurrence of road accidents rose by 15 per cent in 2018 over the previous year.

“The fatalities have seen a spurt of six per cent and injuries rose by 19 per cent,” the report said.

“Lack of knowledge of road safety rules is one of the main causes of accidents. Majority of these were caused due to negligent and callous driving,” reported India Today quoting Assam Director General of Police Kuladhar Saikia.

He further said that several deaths and injuries due to road accidents could have been prevented.

The report also informed that 48 per cent of the accidents occurred on the national highways while 26 per cent of those took place on the state highways and other roads.

“Road accidents rose in 30 districts of Assam and four districts witnessed a dip. Fatalities and injuries rose in 24 and 26 districts respectively,” the report added.
