A ghastly incident of rape has sent chill down the spines of the people living in Namrup (read in Assam). A 36-year-old resident of Kachari Pathar near Namrup – Sonu Bhuyan – raped a six-year-old minor girl on Friday evening by showing her the lure of the lucre. The ‘rapist’ Sonu is the father of three daughters.
The Officer In-Charge (OC) of Namrup Police Station, Ishwar Singh, informed that the cops caught up with ‘rapist’ Sonu and he has been booked under Section 342 IPC under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO), 2012. He is presently being grilled by the cops of Namrup Police Station.

In February 2018, the Assam Government said 29,223 incidents of violence against women were reported from various parts of the State in the past two years. In a written reply to a query by Congress MLA Nandita Das, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary told the Assembly that 8,771 cases of physical assault, 1,552 rapes and 4,794 incidents of kidnapping were registered with the police in the fiscal 2016-17.
In a bid to prevent the menaces, the State Government has initiated various steps such as formation of a women’s investigation cell in the police, setting up of a women’s cell in every district and sub-division and a special juvenile police unit in the district headquarters, the minister said.
