Guwahati: Senior politician and former Union Minister Rajen Gohain has resigned from the Asom Jatiya Parishad (AJP) citing personal reasons, bringing an end to his brief association with the regional party.

In a letter addressed to AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi, Gohain announced his decision to step down from the โ€œprimary membership and all posts and responsibilitiesโ€ of the party with immediate effect.

โ€œThrough this letter, I, Rajen Gohain, hereby resign from the primary membership and from all posts and responsibilities associated with the Asom Jatiya Parishad with immediate effect due to personal reasons,โ€ the veteran leader wrote, while also expressing gratitude to the party leadership, workers and supporters for their cooperation during his his association with the party.

Gohain, who recently contested the Assam Assembly elections from Barhampur constituency, was defeated by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Jitu Goswami.

The 75-year-old leader said he intends to focus more on his personal life, though his resignation has triggered speculation over his future political plans.

A veteran leader in Assam politics, Gohain was earlier associated with the BJP and served as a Member of Parliament from the Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency. He also served as the Union Minister of State for Railways during his parliamentary tenure.
