Guwahati: On the occasion of Goru Bihu, Asom Jatiya Parishad (AJP) president Lurinjyoti Gogoi on Tuesday called upon the people of the state to reaffirm their commitment to economic self-reliance and cultural unity.
In his message, Gogoi said the festival carries deeper significance beyond celebration, emphasising the need to strengthen indigenous identity and build a self-sustaining society rooted in tradition. He expressed hope that the spirit of Rongali Bihu would inspire renewed energy and collective resolve among the people.
Highlighting the cultural importance of Goru Bihu, he noted that the festival, an integral part of Assamโs agrarian heritage, symbolises the close bond between humans and livestock and reflects the foundation of the rural economy.
Gogoi urged citizens to mark the occasion with a collective pledge for economic independence while preserving the stateโs rich cultural traditions. He stressed that unity and cultural cohesion are essential to safeguarding Assamโs identity in the face of emerging challenges.
He also appealed to people across communities to celebrate the festival in harmony, with pride and a shared vision for a stronger and self-reliant Assam.
Goru Bihu marks the beginning of the Assamese New Year festivities, during which farmers honour cattle with ritual baths and traditional practices, acknowledging their vital role in agriculture and rural livelihoods. The festival embodies values of gratitude, sustainability, and community bonding.
