Guwahati: The Asom Jatiya Parishad (AJP) on Tuesday announced its first list of candidates for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections during a press conference held at Greenwood Resort in Khanapara.
The party named candidates for eight constituencies, while discussions are still underway regarding nominees for the Sadiya and Central Guwahati seats.
According to the announcement, Lurinjyoti Gogoi will contest from Khowang, Rajen Gohain from Barhampur, Bani Kanta Das from Morigaon, Pankaj Lochan Goswami from Palashbari, Dilip Barua from Bajali, Jiban Chutia from Sarupathar, Mainak Patra from Dibrugarh, and Alhaaj Rezaul Karim Chaudhury from Binnakandi.
Addressing the media, party leader Lurinjyoti Gogoi criticised the Election Commissionโs decision to allow only 13 days for election campaigning, alleging that the limited timeframe appears designed to favour a particular political party. He said the move restricts opportunities for public outreach and curtails the ability of opposition parties to communicate key issues to voters.
Gogoi also claimed that the shortened campaign period could hinder public awareness on several matters, including the case related to demise of Zubeen Garg.
Party leaders stated that the AJP has been working to avoid a split in votes by holding extensive discussions aimed at bringing like-minded forces together ahead of the elections. The party confirmed that it plans to contest 10 constituencies, while โfriendly contestsโ may take place in two or three seats.
