Guwahati: Ranjit Deka, vice-president of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), has resigned from the party following denial of a ticket for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections.

In a letter addressed to the party leadership, Deka announced his resignation from the partyโ€™s primary membership as well as all organisational responsibilities. He cited โ€œpersonal reasons, ideological differences, and changing political circumstancesโ€, adding that the decision was taken after careful consideration and without any external pressure.

A long-time member of the AGP, Deka expressed gratitude for the opportunities he had received during his association with the party. However, he also indicated a growing sense of disillusionment with recent developments, pointing to a disconnect with the partyโ€™s current direction.

Political observers say the denial of a party ticket appears to have been a key trigger for his resignation. Sources indicated that Deka was expecting to be fielded from the Bajali constituency but was not included in the partyโ€™s final list of candidates, leading to discontent among his supporters.

Deka has not yet announced his next political move, though speculation persists that he may either join another party or enter the fray as an Independent candidate.
