Panchyat polls turned out to be violent in Dhekiajuli of Sonitpur district in Assam on Wednesday as police had to open fire to control the situation.

The police also had to baton-charge the supporters of both Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress, who were involved in the violence, to disperse them in which three persons were injured.

According to information, police opened fire in the air at Thelamora in Dhekiajuli of Sonitpur district in a poling station No 120 Lower Primary School as supporters of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) clashed with the Congress over an allegation of rigging in the polling station.

Sources informed: “The local Congress leaders and supporters alleged that the poll officials in the polling station at the 120 Lower Primary School at Thelamara in Dhekiajuli of Sonitpur district were involved in rigging for the BJP. When the Congress supporters raised the issue, the BJP supporters clashed with the former and then a vioelent situation was created in the polling station. After that the police personnel opened fire in the air and also baton-charged on the violent supporters of both the partues. Three persons were injured in the incident.”

The Superintendent of Police of Sonitpur district rushed to the spot, however.

The District Returning Officer-cum-Deputy Commissioner of Sonitpur confirmed that the police had to open four rounds of firing.
