Guwahati: Amid the upcoming assembly elections in Assam, a team of the Emergency and General Patrol Duty (EGPD) unit of , under Dispur Police Station, intercepted a suspected arms trafficker near Bagharbari Chowk in Panjabari and recovered an illegal firearm.
Two individuals allegedly involved in the illicit weapon trade were arrested, police confirmed on Friday evening.
The operation took place during a PaPa (Police Patrol) round in Guwahati’s Panjabari area when police personnel stopped Krishna Das (29), a resident of Botahguli.
During a search, officers recovered a 7.65 mm pistol, along with one magazine and three live rounds, from his possession.
Police officials said the recovery immediately raised suspicion of illegal arms circulation in the area, prompting investigators to question the accused about the source of the weapon.
During preliminary interrogation, Krishna Das reportedly disclosed that the pistol had been supplied by Akhilesh Yadav (40), a native of Muzaffarpur in Bihar who currently operates a salon business at Hatigaon Chariali in Guwahati.
Based on this confession, police teams swiftly tracked down and detained the second accused.
During questioning, Yadav allegedly admitted that he had brought the firearm from Bihar and handed it over to Krishna Das nearly a month ago, intending to sell it at a higher price, officials said.
The case has raised concerns about a possible inter-state illegal arms supply chain, with investigators now examining how the weapon was procured and transported into Assam.
Officials said a detailed investigation is underway, including technical analysis, verification of criminal antecedents, and exploration of possible links to wider arms trafficking networks.
Police sources indicated that further arrests cannot be ruled out as the probe progresses.
