Assam police recently arrested one Miraj Ali for allegedly submitting forged documents for inclusion in the final list of National Register of Citizens (NRC).

As per reports, Ali, who had been declared a foreigner by the Foreigner’s Tribunal in December 2013, was arrested by Jagiroad police on Thursday.

Ali’s mother- Banesa Khatun had been already arrested earlier and put in a detention camp but he had escaped and was on the run.

This was revealed by the SP of Morigaon district Swapnaneel Deka.

“All angles will be investigated as to how Miraj could get his name listed in the NRC,” Deka added.

Assam Public Works (APW) felt that there are many more like Ali who are illegal Bangladeshi and whose names have been included in the NRC.

APW general secretary Dhrubajyoti Talukdar said that Ali and his two kids Muskan Begum and Sahid Ali were included in the final NRC list.

He also said that there could be lakhs of illegal Bangladeshis whose names entered in the NRC through the verification of forged documents.

APW had earlier alleged that the software and the technology used in updating the NRC was full of loopholes.

“Taking advantage of these loopholes many illegal migrants entered their names in the NRC,” he added.
