Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday announced that the panchayat elections have been postponed to February 2025 instead of December.
The revised voters’ list is expected to be published by December 30, 2024.

Sarma stated that the election process is expected to conclude by February 10, 2025.

The election schedule will be declared in early January with voting being conducted in two phases.

He further stated that the decision to postpone the elections was made during the Assam cabinet meeting on Tuesday.
Sarma said that a comprehensive delimitation effort was underway to ensure that the overall number of panchayats does not decrease.

Sarma stated that reorganizing panchayats without reducing their numbers is an essential task.
He assured that amendments to the relevant Act would be considered if needed, to preserve panchayat numbers in line with either the new population data or current figures.
