On October 2, 2014, Swachh Bharat Mission was launched throughout the length and breadth of the country as a national movement by the Prime Minister (PM) of India Narendra Modi who has always been stressing on cleanliness since he took over the reins of the country. The campaign aims to achieve the vision of a ‘Clean India’ by October 2, 2019.

However, it seems that the Dhubri Municipal Board is “oblivious” of this vision of Modi. Otherwise, what explains the dustbins of the town filled-to-the-brim even on the day of Gandhi Jayanti and emanating bad odour and the municipal authorities least bit concerned about the same?

The municipal board in Dhubri is led by the saffron party. Going by this fact, they should have been more particular about cleaning the dustbins of the town on a regular basis. PM Modi had said recently that “On October 2, we mark the beginning of Gandhiji’s 150th birth anniversary. It is also the day Swachh Bharat Mission completes four years of being a historic mass movement aimed at fulfilling Bapu’s dream of a Clean India. I salute all those working towards a Swachh Bharat!”

The Dhubri district adminstration had started a mega campaign and organised a number of activities in order to make the common people in the district aware on how important it is to stay clean and maintain hygience following the instructions framed under Swachata Hi Sewa Campaign 2018.

On the one hand, the district administration celebrated the closing ceromony of Swachata Hi Sewa Campaign 2018 and organised a mega event at the auditorium hall of the district library in which the Deputy Commissioner, Anant Lal Gyani, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Dhubri Muncipal Board Jhintu Borah along with a number of dignitaries delivered long speeches on cleanliness.

Speeches on cleanliness are good to hear. But, a look at Dhubri town with “overflowing” dustbins is making for a real ugly picture. A municipal worker of Dhubri Municipal Board, requesting anonymity, said that all the vehicles of the municipal board carrying garbage was taken away by other Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and different groups to carry out cleanliness drive on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti in tandem with the district administration. As a result, the garbages of Dhubri town remained “uncleared”.

The Dhubri district adminstration, about a month back, had carried out a total cleanliness and eviction drive in the wake of the Governor’s visit and the town had worn a “spruced up look”. The Assam Governor, Professor Jagdish Mukhi, was pretty impressed to see the town almost spic and span. But, within a month, things are back to square one and garbages can be seen piled up everywhere in Dhubri town making for eyesores.
