Guwahati: An infant trafficking incident was reported on Tuesday with allegations of a newborn being sold for Rs 30,000 in Silapathar of Dhemaji, Assam.
The Dhemaji Child Welfare Committee (CWC) has lodged a complaint at the Silapathar Police Station with details of the illicit transaction.

It has been alleged that the parents of the new first faked its death and then sold it for Rs 30 thousand.

An investigation found that the infant, born at Assam Medical College and Hospital in Dibrugarh, was initially taken to paediatrician Dr Chandjit Doley’s residence for medical treatment.

However, it was later discovered that a couple from Nilakh, Dhemaji, had secretly sold the baby to a Silapathar resident for Rs 30,000.

In an attempt to conceal the sale, the newborn’s biological parents informed the CWC that their child had died.
The CWC Chairperson after finding out about the incident, filed a formal complaint, demanding a thorough investigation.
Police said that an investigation regarding the incident is being carried out.
