Guwahati: The Meghalaya High Court has directed the Principal Secretary of the Urban Affairs Department to form a committee to oversee traffic regulation and street vending in Shillong City.

The committee has been asked to identify authorised vending areas/zones in and around Shillong.

The committee will specify areas for vending according to guidelines and permitted by law.

The HC also asked the committee to make an inventory of authorised vendors and verify if they are operating in designated areas.

Apart from this, the committee will also identify areas not authorized for vending and create a detailed inventory of unauthorised vendors.

The court’s order was passed on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Philip Khrawbok Shati.

The committee’s report must be submitted by February 28, 2025, with the next hearing scheduled for the first week of March 2025, the court stated.
