A 22-year-old girl suffering from bilateral pneumonia has got a new lease of life, thanks to the effort of a team of dedicated physicians of Narayana Superspeciality Hospital (NSH).

Young girl Megha Sinha was rushed to the emergency department of the NSH located at Amingaon on outskirts of Guwahati with severe breathing difficulty and fever.

She was severely breathless and despite giving oxygen support she was unable to maintain oxygen level in blood.

As she severely lacked oxygen in her blood critical care team of NSH has decided to take her ventilator support, with 100% oxygen broad spectrum antibiotics and other supportive care were given.

She was continuously monitored and managed by a dedicated team of critical care specialists.

This type of bilateral pneumonia where both the lungs get involved and requiring maximal oxygen (100%) and ventilator support, usually takes 3-4 weeks to recover. But thanks to the relentless hard work by the dedicated ICU team, she recovered very fast.

Patient was out of ventilator and ICU within three days and shifted to ward. On the 8th day she got discharge from hospital and now she is doing fine.

“Bilateralpneumonia can be fatal and is usually caused by viral infection. This problem can be started with running nose, cough, fever, Bodyache diarrhea and breathlessness,” Dr. Apurba Kumar Borah, Consultant and HOD, critical care and emergency medicine, said.

“It can progress very fast specially patients with other respiratory problem like COPD, Asthma etc. So seeking medical help early in the course of disease is very much prudent. The high risks patients can go for vaccination also, which is beneficial in preventing this kind of illness,” he said.
