A section of prominent activists of the historic Assam Movement have mulled for a consensus regarding future agitational programmes towards scrapping of the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill -2016.

They have also appealed to all organizations opposing the Bill including the AASU, AJYCP, KMSS etc to form a common platform so that their united voices come more and more strongly in a well organized manner.

Rameswar Sharma, Hiren Kumar Saharia , Bhargab Kr Das, Lankeswar Baishya and Naba Deka – all prominent activists of the Assam Movement have addressed a press conference on Thursday afternoon  at Swahid Bhawan in Mangaldai, the birth place of Assam Movement in 1979.

They also appealed to all the organizations to consider in taking the path of mass agitation in a pragmatic manner rather in an emotional way without affecting any day to day life of common people including the academic atmosphere of the students’ community in the State. Hiren Kumar Saharia of Kalaigaon , a former AASU activist and a victim under NSA strongly supported the ongoing movement to oppose the CAB and also

condemned the anti-Assam role of the BJP.

“The need of the hour is to unite all the protesting organizations under a single platform and the AASU should take the lead role in it. During the six-year long Assam Agitation demanding the deportation of illegal foreigners, the students’ community had to lose their academic years. So the leaders of the anti-CAB movement should take every care to protect the academic years of the students,” said Hiren Kumar Saharia while condemning the role of the BJP.

He also laid stress on the need of taking up of short term and long term policy to continue the movement with the involvement of all sections of the society irrespective of caste, religion and language to form a common platform like the All Assam Gana Sangram Parishad during the Assam Movement.

Significantly he also appealed the leaders of the AASU and other agitating organizations to adopt a time specific economic agenda so that a work culture with productivity could be initiated.

“The youth of the State should be encouraged to take up multi cropping agriculture instead of single cropping system with organic cultivation only to strengthen the economy of the State,” he added.

Octogenarian activist of Assam Movement Rameswar Sarma taking part in the press meet appealed to create mass movement to protect the interest of the State and its people. Former activist of Assam Movement Lankeswar Baishya, Naba Kumar Deka and Bhargab Kumar Das of Mangaldai while addressing the media also strongly condemned the recent move of the State Government to arrest eminent academician and senior citizen Dr Hiren Gohain on charges of sedition.
