A woman from Kharmuja of Assam’s Goalpara district, who was allegedly raped and set on fire, died on Tuesday night at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).

The incident took place on Tuesday morning at around 1 am when the woman, mother of two children, was sleeping at her residence.

During the incident, her husband was not at home.

A local goon, identified as Monower aka Madhu, barged into the house of the woman and raped her.

He set her on fire when she screamed for help.

The area falls under the Goalpara Sadar police station and Kharmuja outpost.

On Tuesday, the victim’s father lodged an FIR regarding the incident.

On Wednesday, as the body of the victim arrived at Kharmuja, locals took out a protest rally demanding immediate arrest of the accused.

They also tried to cordon off the Kharmuja police outpost.

However, the agitators were pacified at the persuasion of Dipul Tamuli, the officer-in-charge of Sadar police station.

He assured the locals that the prime accused would not be spared at any cost.

A case has been registered under sections 447/448/376/511/436 and 307 of the Indian Penal Code.

Police sources confirmed that the police have already arrested Ikbal Hussain, the father of the accused, in connection with the case on Wednesday.
