Digboi: A 14-year-old student of Sankardev Shishu Niketan, who had sustained injuries after allegedly assaulted by a teacher, died on Saturday (February 7, 2026) while undergoing treatment at Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh.
According to sources, the incident took place on Thursday (February 5, 2026) in the school at Philobari in Assamโs Tinsukia district. The student was allegedly assaulted by a teacher, Sanjib Sharma, under circumstances that are now under investigation. Following the alleged assault, the studentโs health condition reportedly deteriorated.
The student was initially provided medical care and later referred to AMCH, Dibrugarh, where he was admitted for advanced treatment. Despite medical efforts, he passed away on Saturday morning.
The incident has led to reactions across the district, with student bodies and civil society organisations condemning the alleged act of violence on school premises.
The Tinsukia District Committee of TMPK expressed shock over the death of the minor. In a press statement, the organisation said violence against a child by an educator is unacceptable and constitutes a serious violation of trust and child rights.
TMPK demanded an immediate, impartial and time-bound investigation and called for strict legal action against those responsible, stating that accountability must be ensured.
โSchools are meant to be safe spaces for children. Such incidents raise serious questions about accountability within educational institutions,โ the statement said.
Meanwhile, police sources confirmed that an investigation has been initiated to establish the exact sequence of events leading to the studentโs death. Further details are awaited.
The case has once again highlighted concerns around corporal punishment, child safety and institutional responsibility in schools.
