The 1st ever Indo-Myanmar Doctor’s Conference will be held at Mandalay Township in Myanmar on July 7.

The step was taken up in an effort to develop a common medical knowledge between the doctors on two countries.

Twenty four doctors from India including three doctors from Indian Medical Association (IMA) headquarters besides doctors from Assam and Manipur are taking part in the Conference.

Manipur chief secretary Dr J Suresh Babu accompanied by president Dr Shyamkumar Laishram of IMA Manipur Branch led doctors formally flagged off the conference during a function organized at IMA house located at its office premises at Lamphelpat in Imphal on Thursday.

Past general secretary Dr R N Tandon of IMA headquarters and vice president in charge Dr Pragnesh Joshi of IMA headquarters – North East Committee will also participate in the conference cum doctors’ meeting at Mandalay.

The historic event and first of its kind conference at the association level of India and Myanmar in the region will be jointly organized by IMA and Myanmar Medical Association Mandalay region, according to Dr A Vivekananda who is the Central Working Committee member of IMA.

Currently Myanmar is yet to give recognition to the medical degrees of India in their country. Similarly India also has the same story.

So considering it as an important one, we are trying to take up the matter at the level of Consulate General of India at Mandalay, Dr Vivekananda said.

The convenor of IMA told Northeast Now that they’re also planning to take up the much demanded issue of medical tourism between the two countries and other relevant joint scientific meetings of the two countries.

“We’ll also be exploring various medical and doctors related issues of the two countries,” he added.

So the doctors’ team will be leaving for Myanmar via Moreh-Tamu border towns on Friday. The team is planning to return in Manipur on July 12.
