Doomdooma: A tragic road accident claimed the life of a man identified as Ajit Deb on Friday after a passenger bus named โAzizโ (registration number AS-23BC8776), travelling towards Assam’s Tinsukia, allegedly hit him at Borhapjan Amtoli along National Highway 37.
Sources said the victim died on the spot, triggering widespread public outrage in the area.
According to local sources, the bus was heading towards Tinsukia when the accident occurred on the busy stretch of the highway.
The impact of the collision was severe, leaving Ajit Deb critically injured and causing his immediate death at the scene.
Soon after the incident, angry residents gathered on NH-37 and staged a protest by burning tyres and blocking the highway. The protest led to heavy disruption of vehicular movement for a considerable period.
A local resident said, โFrequent overspeeding on this highway has become a serious threat to public safety. Strict monitoring is urgently needed.โ
Another protester alleged that repeated accidents continue to occur due to the lack of effective traffic control measures.
Five people have been killed in road accidents in Doomdooma over the past fortnight, according to local residents.
Police and administration officials later reached the spot and attempted to calm the protesters and restore normal traffic movement.
Tension, however, continued to prevail in the area following the fatal accident.
