Guwahati: Three young women died in a road accident in the early hours of Sunday after their car hit a parked truck in the Mathgharia area of Guwahati.
The accident occurred around 4 am near a hospital gate in Mathgharia, where a truck had been parked by the roadside after unloading goods. A Swift car coming from the Gitanagar side crashed into the stationary Tata 407 truck, bearing registration number AS 01 FC 4908.
The impact was severe, leaving the car badly damaged. All three occupants sustained fatal injuries, with two dying at the spot and the third later passing away at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital.
Due to heavy damage, rescue teams used a JCB machine to recover the bodies from the wreckage.
The deceased have been identified as Puja Saha (26) from Goalpara and Akanksha Saikia (23) from Sivasagar. Saikia worked in the admissions department of Royal Global University and was originally from Sapekhati in Sonari. The identity of the third victim is yet to be confirmed.
The driver of the car, identified as Shemim Ahmed, fled the scene immediately after the crash and is currently absconding. Police said efforts are underway to trace him.
Officers from Noonmati Traffic Police reached the spot shortly after being informed and began rescue and investigation work.
Preliminary investigation indicates the vehicle was hired from a car rental service. Police have traced the vehicle owner and are continuing efforts to locate the absconding driver and determine the exact cause of the accident.
